Eight years ago, I was out of work … and doing everything I could to stay that way.

I had a six-month-old daughter and I desperately wanted to stay home with her. I was so done with sitting at a desk all day, dealing with office politics, having to run my life according to someone else’s schedule and demands on my time.

I threw myself into freelance writing – submitted magazine articles, children’s stories, entered short story contests – it was the only kind of writing I knew. When I got my first check my heart jumped … only to discover it was for $40.

I had to admit, the amount of work I was doing for the pay I was making wasn’t going to cut it.

Then one day, in the middle of an article, my computer crashed, and of course, I hadn’t backed it up. Worse yet, I didn’t have the money to replace it. What kind of writer doesn’t own a computer, for goodness sakes?

Reality started to sink in. Hard.

That’s when I remembered a letter I received with the headline: Can you write a letter like this one? In the subhead, it talked about making $100,000 a year – as a freelance copywriter! Crazy, I thought when I first got it. But not so crazy that I threw it away.

I dug that letter out and read it – about 10 times – while my family slept. By the next morning, I was determined to make the promise in that letter come true … to become a six-figure copywriter.
