Why Big Ideas Are Like Crystal Balls
by Monica Day
“If we’d only known a year ago this was going to happen,” my friend complained over a glass of wine in my living room, “but who could have possibly known?”
I want to scream – I DID! – and so did all my colleagues. But I don’t. I sip a little more wine instead and nod politely.
These are hard times to say, “I told you so.” And equally hard to hold your tongue. So I’ll tell you the things I didn’t feel like I could tell my friend.
The economic crisis the world is facing right now was absolutely, 100% predictable. In fact, one of my clients, a financial newsletter publisher, warned their readers of the credit derivatives implosion. And yet another accurately predicted that the subprime mortgage market would drive the real estate market into the toilet.
And today, when Alan Greenspan admitted he made “a mistake” when he wrongly assumed banks would self-regulate – um, we knew that too. (And for the record, I find it insulting that someone so intelligent is playing so dumb and expects us to buy it – but I’ll save the outrage for another column!)
I talked about all this pretty openly at cocktail parties – I’m sure my friend was there. She considered me a bit nuts at the time. After all, she’s in real estate. They were all rolling in dough, convinced the party would never end, even as I was predicting the inevitable hangover.
I stopped writing financial copy at the end of last year. The train wreck I had been writing about for over four years was at hand – and I didn’t have the stomach to watch the prediction come to pass.
But I am thankful I was warned.
While my friends lament the good times, and cut back and pinch pennies, not much has changed for me. Yes, economic times are a bit tougher at the Day household – based more on the fallout from my divorce than the stock market. But I don’t lose sleep at night over all the doom and gloom in the news today. And you don’t have to, either.
The most valuable thing I learned from the years I spent writing financial copy was how to get out ahead of the curve of the daily headlines – and see the bigger trends at work. Our mandate was to come up with Big Ideas that sell subscriptions. To do that, we had to know where to look to find them.
If you’ve been reading The Copy Protégé for a while, you might have seen – and even purchased by now – our research course, Finding the World’s Best Ideas How to Access More Than $100,000 Worth of Intelligence for as Little as 55 Cents a Day! What you might not realize is that the author of that course, Richard Conero, is the same researcher who predicted today’s economic decline to the letter – using only the skills and insider tips he put into the course!
Seriously.
He is the secret weapon who lives in the back pocket of leading direct marketing companies such as Forbes, Agora Publishing, and 21st Century Investor … just to name a few.
He literally predicted exactly how it would happen – four years ago – and warned a lucky subset of investors’ way in advance so they could protect their money. In fact, every single investment recommendation he’s ever made has boomed by at least 100% — but he’s never set foot on Wall Street!
This is because Richard doesn’t just find information, he gathers intelligence. He can:
- Size up the investment potential of a company – or find opportunities in just about any market , in any country, on any subject – in as little as five minutes
- Find the super stories behind the headlines in mainstream media
- Take an overdone topic and give it a twist or new angle – allowing his clients to extract millions of dollars in sales as a result
And he does it all without leaving home – using nothing more than a computer with kick-butt internet speed.
Learning this skill has given me a tremendous amount of confidence. I no longer feel at the mercy of the world’s movers and shakers – or even the laws they make or the trouble the stir up.
Knowledge is not only power – it’s a crystal ball that can reveal enough of the future to protect yourself, and maybe even make a fortune, when you put the intelligence you gather to work in your favor.

Marx used it in politics … Einstein used it in physics … Bill Gates used it to launch the computer age …
I’m talking about the power of a Big Idea to shape opinions, change the world, create culture-changing innovations … and yes, make you rich.
If you track just about any trend, fad, and cultural phenomenon to its inception, you’ll find it. The kernel of the Big Idea that sprouted it.
Most people think that you have to be some kind of genius to join the league of great thinkers. The truth is, you don’t have to be more creative, more connected – more anything – than the next guy to turn your ideas into gold.
You just have to know what questions to ask, and where to find the answers. It’s that simple – and in this age of information overload – that hard.
In Finding the World’s Best Ideas How to Access More Than $100,000 Worth of Intelligence for as Little as 55 Cents a Day!, you will discover the secrets and tools that transform the noise of internet information into the power of knowledge and intelligence. You can:
- Join the world’s most successful marketers and make millions of dollars every day… on a single idea!
- Get out from under Google and Yahoo – and find out where the most profitable Big Ideas really live on the internet.
- Use a simple process to transform the intelligence you gather into unique and disruptive ideas that will grab your audience’s attention and keep it all the way through to the end of your promotion or presentation.
- Find out what your target audience thinks, feels and eats for breakfast – without spending a dime on surveys, focus groups and other costly data procurement.
- Assemble a treasure chest of intelligence that you can return to again and again – you’ll never again have to start from scratch on any project!
- Learn to discern credible sources from hoaxes, personal opinions and outlandish claims hiding on the Web disguised as “experts.’
- Find the lunatic fringe – and follow their ramblings all the way to the bank.
- Learn to set aside your own ideals and opinions and look at stories and ideas through many different lenses – greatly increasing the numbers of ideas you can develop on any given topic.
The world doesn’t need one more average idea … one more average product … one more average promotional campaign. People are hungry for stimulating, compelling, passionate ideas and opportunities that break through the noise of the rest.
Giving it to them can be a tall order – if you’re looking in the same places, reading the same news, paying attention to the same bouncing ball as everyone else.
But it’s the simplest thing in the world when you free your mind – and your fingertips – from the rest of the mind-numbing drivel out there and say something of substance to someone! And then back it up with substantiated proof, credible claims, and little-known but valid intelligence.
Finding the World’s Best Ideas How to Access More Than $100,000 Worth of Intelligence for as Little as 55 Cents a Day will show you how to do just that – find the edge, lead other people to it – and cash in!
It’slike freedom from the mundane – in a hyperlink.
Here’s what some people have said about the course:
“This is impressive! It took me years to figure out most of the tips and strategies that Richard reveals in just a few pages. And then he shared some secrets I hadn’t figured out yet. I’m not sure I like the idea of people being able to learn this stuff so easily — it might ruin my reputation as a research "miracle worker."
– R. Barnard, Senior Researcher, Agora Financial
“Just finished reading your “Finding the World’s Best Ideas” book. GREAT STUFF. Mind you … I’ve done research for about 20 + years for my technical writing projects and I never knew some of these sites existed. This is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to learn more about research. I’ll be honest here … I wasn’t sure it would be worth the money. BOY was I wrong. Thanks for taking the time to put this together.”

“I just finished Finding the World’s Best Ideas–How to Access More than $100,000 Worth of Intelligence for as Little as 55 Cents a Day! What an excellent course. It gives incredibly valuable information about "intelligence," and then goes on to show you how to find it. I’m already putting what I learned to work.
This course would be indispensable for ANY writer, student, entrepreneur writing a business plan, journalist, novelist, you name it. I can’t think of anyone that would not benefit from this course.
I also love having it in an electronic version with the links right there. It’s in such an easy-to-understand and quickly usable format. You can bet I’ll have "Finding the World’s Best Ideas" up on my computer while I work.

Quickest Tip Ever: Computer Back Ups
OK, I did better this time – but not enough to brag.
The first time my computer crashed, six years ago, I had no back-up. Nada. I was devastated.
This time, it had been three months since I backed up. Not devastated, but not optimal, either. Yes, I have a lot of great excuses … I was traveling … I moved … but none of them replaces what I lost.
You know, I only write this little missive every week so you avoid my mistakes and copy my successes. I think you know what column this one falls under.
Back up your computer. Do it now. There, I feel better already.
