What To Do When You’re Serious
About Making It
by Monica Day

There’s a turning point in every career transition when you get serious. You’re ready to go to the next level. Whether it’s to get your first client, break through the six-figure mark, or launch your own website or product – the time comes when you are ready.

It reminds me a lot of being in the last two weeks of a pregnancy. You go from being nervous about the birth – anticipating the pain or worrying about what might go wrong – to wanting the baby out of your body, no matter what.

In fact, I distinctly recall, somewhere around the 20th hour of natural labor (read: no pain relief) with my first daughter, saying, “Just give me the f***ing scalpel, I’ll get it out myself!”

If you’re at that point in making the transition to your copywriting career, trust me, you know it. You just might not know how close you are to the final push before your new career is finally born.

I remember the feeling well. And I’m here to tell you – you’re much closer than you realize. The final push could be right around the corner.

I usually reserve the referrals for a separate section – but I’m taking the liberty of breaking format today and giving you today’s resource referral right here…

AWAI just announced their first-ever writer’s retreat – and if you are right on that edge of becoming a full-fledged copywriter yourself, I recommend you do whatever it takes to be there.

Maybe you’ve got your first client and your first live assignment. Perfect!

Or maybe you are just about to start marketing your services and you need that final bit of assurance that you’re ready. Also, perfect.

Even if you’ve been working for a little while, but you want to breakthrough to that A-list of writers working for the big names in the industry – you’ll want to make your way to Virginia this May 28-31.

You know if you read Copy Protégé regularly, we never, ever do a hard sell here. We make suggestions. We tell you what worked for us. We trust that with enough suggestions, you’ll find what works for you.

Today is different. I honestly believe this is a unique opportunity, at just the right time for a select few people. I know it from the letters we get, from the people we work with in our mentoring program, and from our own experience. And if you are one of those people, I don’t want you to miss out.

This writer’s retreat won’t be for everyone – and it’s a good thing, because unlike bootcamp, this is going to be a small group – a very personal, very intimate event with plenty of personal attention from four of the top copywriters in the industry.

If you are right on the edge of making it, I can tell you from personal experience. This will be the thing that gets you over to the other side. This will be the final push.

I’ve found that every time I’ve made a transition in my copywriting career, I’ve needed to surround myself, live and in person, with colleagues and peers – people who understand what I’m going through and what I need to make it – and are committed to giving it to me.

I’ve never found a better opportunity than this one – and I have no idea if or when they’ll offer this again. So I’m going to strongly urge you to grab one of those precious few spaces.

And just to make sure you take me seriously, I’m going to make you a special offer.

If you take my word for it, and decide to go to this retreat based on just my say-so…you’ll get a free half hour one-on-one coaching session with me either before you go to prepare, or after you get back to follow-up. Whichever you prefer.

Now, if you’re already on the roster to go, that’s great. You’ve made the right decision. But if you aren’t – and you decide to trust me enough to give it a whirl, than I want to go the extra mile for you. I want to make sure you get the push you need to make it over the hump…to success.

So go check out the retreat link here – (and be sure to use this link when you register, or call them and let them know you are taking me up on my offer). I think that once you see who is going to be teaching, the incredible natural beauty of your surroundings, and the level of attention you’ll be receiving…you’ll know if it’s the right thing for you at the right time.

Quick Marketing Tip: Yes, It Really Was That Easy

A few of our readers wrote in last week to ask more about JoAnn’s story. Several people thought it sounded too easy! They thought they missed something. So I asked Jo to clear it up. Here’s what she had to say:

I want to thank everyone for your emails regarding my article, “Your Passion Is Right Under Your Nose.”

First, I want to assure all of you that you didn’t miss anything. I did not do anything in between sending the card from Threads magazine and receiving an email from my client.

On the card, it asked for my name, home address, email address (so they can send me the advertising information) and my occupation. I put “Freelance Copywriter—Direct Response Marketing.” I filled in the circles for the ads, and I mailed the card in.

When my client saw the word “marketing” he sent me an email asking me to market his DVD’s. And the rest is history. I really didn’t do anything else. It came to me.

So, go for your passion! You never know what can happen!
